DITY/PPM Profit Estimate
With a PPM (Personally Procured Move), the military pays you what it would have cost them to hire professional movers. The difference between that payment and your actual expenses is your profit.
Tips to Maximize DITY Move Profit
- $Get multiple quotes and choose the most cost-effective option (rental truck vs. container vs. trailer)
- $Recruit friends and family to help load/unload instead of hiring labor
- $Keep every receipt — moving expenses can offset the taxable reimbursement
- $Sell heavy or bulky items you do not need and buy replacements at your destination
- $Book rental trucks early for the best rates, especially during summer PCS season
- $Weigh your vehicle empty BEFORE loading, and full AFTER — you need both weight tickets
Cost of Living Comparison
Understanding the cost of living difference is critical when evaluating job offers and budgeting for your new location. US average = 100.
Texas
92.1
Below national average
Virginia
103.7
Above national average
Heads up: Virginia is approximately 13% more expensive than Texas. A $50,000 salary in Texas would need to be approximately $56,298 in Virginia to maintain the same standard of living.
Important: Last PCS Move is Free
If you separate from the military, you are entitled to a final PCS move at government expense to your Home of Record (HOR) or Home of Selection (HOS), as long as you complete the move within 180 days of your separation date. This applies to both government-arranged moves and DITY/PPM moves. After 180 days, you may request a one-year extension, but approval is not guaranteed. Plan your move early and coordinate with your Transportation Office (TMO) before separating.
Military Move Checklist (10 Key Steps)
Schedule Transportation Office Counseling
Visit your local Transportation Office (TMO/PPO) 8-10 weeks before your move date to learn your entitlements and start the process.
Get a Copy of Your Orders
Ensure your separation or PCS orders are finalized. You need these to schedule your move and file claims.
Decide: Government Move vs. DITY/PPM
Choose between a government-arranged move (TMO handles everything) or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY) where you move yourself and get reimbursed.
Inventory Your Household Goods
Create a detailed inventory with photos/video of all items. This protects you if anything is damaged or lost during the move.
Get Weight Tickets (DITY Moves)
For PPM/DITY moves, get empty and full weight tickets at a certified scale. You need these to get reimbursed.
File Change of Address
Update your address with USPS, banks, insurance, VA, DEERS, and your vehicle registration/driver's license in your new state.
Transfer Medical Records
Request copies of your military medical records and dental records. Set up care at your new location (VA, TRICARE, or civilian).
Research Your New Area
Check cost of living, schools, VA facilities, job market, and housing options at your destination.
Keep All Receipts
Save every receipt from your move (fuel, tolls, lodging, packing materials, rental truck). Many expenses are reimbursable or tax-deductible.
File Your Travel Claim
Submit your travel voucher (DD-1351-2) within 30 days of arrival. Include weight tickets, receipts, and a copy of your orders.
Travel Allowance Breakdown
Per diem and mileage rates are approximate and vary by location and fiscal year. Actual per diem rates are set by the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO).
