Do's and Don'ts for Your VA Claim
Do's
- File an Intent to File FIRST to lock in your effective date while you gather evidence.
- Describe your WORST days during your C&P exam, not your best days.
- Get a nexus letter from a qualified medical professional for each condition.
- Keep copies of EVERYTHING you submit to the VA.
- Get buddy statements from multiple people -- the more corroboration, the better.
- Claim secondary conditions -- they add to your combined rating.
- Request your complete service treatment records from the National Personnel Records Center.
- See a specialist (not just your PCP) for your diagnosis and nexus letter.
- Document everything in writing -- even conversations with VA staff.
- Use a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) or accredited claims agent for free help.
Don'ts
- Don't minimize your symptoms to the C&P examiner -- they are not your commanding officer.
- Don't skip the C&P exam -- it's an automatic denial if you don't show up.
- Don't submit a claim without a current diagnosis -- 'I have pain' is not enough.
- Don't rely solely on VA medical records -- private treatment records and nexus letters are often stronger.
- Don't wait to file -- the longer you wait, the more effective date back-pay you lose.
- Don't exaggerate or lie -- the VA will find inconsistencies and it can tank your entire claim.
- Don't assume the VA will connect the dots for you -- spell everything out clearly.
- Don't use vague language in buddy statements -- specific dates, places, and observations matter.
- Don't forget to claim bilateral conditions (both knees, both shoulders) -- each side is rated separately.
- Don't submit original documents -- always send copies and keep the originals.
